Our over 40’s T20 side overcame postponement and a lack of trousers to win a fabulous T20 at Effingham on Monday.
Losing the toss on a small ground with a strip close to the boundary spelt a high scoring game and Effingham played the conditions well posting 149-3 despite some bruising fielding efforts from the Wizards on what was a warm night. Wickets for Howells, Hewson and senior T20 debutant Max Coney (our underage player for the day) following a smart stumping from Adam Hanley glossed over a couple of drops.
Opening with Corney and Alistair Grant, those watching in the evening sunshine were treated to some spectacular hitting, Ali retiring on 50 from just 15 balls, with 4 fours and 5 sixes at a strike rate of 333.3. Effingham tired of fetching the ball from the neighbouring field and brought on some lovely loopy stuff to slow the scoring but with Dom Rivers sweeping his way to 30 and Martin Fent 27, Weybridge won out comfortably. This was a picture perfect evening at a beautiful ground with some social beers and a lively discussion on bottomless brunches. Kudos to Rich Hewson for washing the kit.
The Wizards progress to the next round.
