Ashok Rao

U11 Development team unbeaten this season. 10 wickets taken with some outstanding bowling.

Having had a spell of good form, the team came together as one today and provided some thrilling cricket, outstanding sportsmanship and excellent teamwork; a performance the team and their parents should be utterly proud of.

Captain, Will Cowland, won the toss and elected to field. Opening the bowling himself turned out to be one of a series of great choices with a beautiful unorthodox left arm spin taking the bails off with the second ball of his over. Sachin Phull followed on from Will and bowled the batsman with his opening ball and ended up taking an impressive 3 wickets for 10 runs. Sachin's consistent length and line has seen his bowling go from strength-to-strength. Mason Wolton was unlucky not to get a wicket with his accurate bowling but this was more than made up for by his aggressive fielding, chasing down balls and getting them back to the keeper quickly and with accuracy. Mason's fielding has been an example to everyone this season.

Having had an outstanding first game of the season last week, Luc McKernan clean bowled another one of the openers. Luc's fielding and backing up has been superb, always getting himself involved. Tristan Tindall has also found his form with his bowling and took two great wickets adding to an increasing tally. Tristan's understanding of the field, backing up, and direction to the others on the field has been particularly impressive.

Finn Blaney came in to bowl and his leg spin was unplayable. Two wickets off two balls and we all kept our fingers crossed for the hat-trick which was unfortunately not to be. Finn's bowling has come on so much and it's a pleasure seeing him making life so difficult for the batsmen! Dylan Rao's bowling was spot on today taking 1 wicket for 6 runs off 3 overs and the swing he's achieving is seeing the batsmen finding it increasingly difficult to play. Alfie Coulthard kept wicket superbly and finally got the stumping he has been looking for. He has been incredibly switched-on in this position and a stumping has evaded him in each game this year by a hair's breadth! The team have become leagues stronger in the field and today's bumpy outfield was a good reminder of why the long barrier is so important.

With a net score of 57 by East Molesey to beat, after our impressive 10 wicket sweep, we couldn't have got a better start than our opening pair, Will and Mason, running beautifully between the wickets. It was a masterclass in demonstrating where single runs could easily be taken and they delivered an impressive 22 runs in their 4 overs. Finn and Sachin held the next 4 overs, gradually edging us towards the target with some lovely stroke-play from both. It is steady partnerships like these that have seen us slowly mount up the runs this year.

Tristan and Luc were faced with their best bowlers who were bowling straight and with real pace. Both did a valiant job at trying to keep them out against some of the best bowling we've faced so far this season. Well done to both Luc and Tristan for sticking with it and showing great determination and resilience.

Alfie and Dylan came in as our last pair with 17 needed to win, both seeming to enjoy regularly taking on the pressure of the final overs. Things were going steadily forwards with some superb boundaries by Alfie and with Dylan on new-found confidence taking the singles and calling confidently. A very close run-out to some excellent fielding took us back from our target and things started to get really tense. Alfie then came to the fore and punished every short ball with a boundary, taking us steadily well past our target and finishing with an impressive innings of 33 runs off 15 balls.

Whilst the win was great, it was particularly impressive to see the team coming together and supporting and looking out for each other at the end; the parents should be particularly proud of the boys for this. The camaraderie that the boys have developed over the years is what is driving this winning streak and it is great to see all the values of sportsmanship and teamwork playing out like this.

We will continue to grow stronger as we work on our calling whilst batting, learning the importance of playing a forward defensive shot against well-pitched straight balls, and the importance of our friend the 'long barrier'! Well done, everyone!
