Match Preview

Simon Rider4 May 2023 - 16:46

So our first game of the Slam season arrives Friday at 18:00 (arrive 17:00 to set up.

We previously played more senior players in the competition but have entered in second tier this year 'the plate'. The intention is to play our strongest T20 younger players (The Undefeated U17 all stars from last year) and add to the team with senior players who qualify. It should be a great experience and it really doesn't matter about the results.

I expect all players to conduct themselves in line with club guidance, help with set up and clear down and return playing kit to me. If you don't you won't be picked again.

We (Weybridge Phoenix) have 6 games, home & away against the 3 teams in our group Surrey Mens Plate 3 -

• Valley End Beserkers
• Gordons School
• Surrey Warriors CC

A few notes on the format -

Coloured kit is worn (I have this and will require it back at the end of each game for washing)
Both teams should be ready to start at 18:00 to preserve the light.
For speed, 10 overs are bowled from one end, 10 from the other.
5.5oz pink ball to be used.
It is the batting teams responsibility to look for the ball to prevent delays
Batsman retire not out at 50, can return if all out.
At least 5 bowlers to be used, bowling no more than 4 overs each
A ball down leg side is legitimate if in reach of the batsman (umpires judgement). In short no automatic leg side wide rule.

10 yard run up for bowlers - worth posting the actual detail here -

• Bowlers shall be limited to a maximum of ten yards for their ‘run-up’. The home team shall provide a marker to clearly show this maximum distance. Should a delivery be completed following a ‘run-up’ materially exceeding this distance then the umpire should declare a no-ball and the consequences detailed in SY-MM.11, SY-MM.12 and SY-MM.13 should follow.
This ruling is to be enforced by the two umpires and any infringement can be called by either. In the interests of the spirit of the competition it is suggested that a warning be issued for the first infringement rather than resort to the immediate calling of a ‘no ball’.
For the avoidance of doubt, a bowler’s ‘run-up’ is their direct & continuous approach to their point of delivery and is not related to the speed in which it is conducted.
Teams should appreciate that the inclusion of this ruling is to help ensure the match as a whole is conducted in the best possible light conditions.

A Wide or No ball incurs a 2 run penalty but no extra ball is bowled.
Any No ball incurs a free hit on the next delivery (even if that delivery is the first ball of the next over from a different bowler)
There is a fielding ring 20-25 metres out. In the plate competition the fielding team is not permitted to have any less than 4 players (excluding the bowler & wicketkeeper) inside the ring, meaning a maximum of 5 outside.

So not much to take in there….

Sheldon is umpiring tomorrow, Bar & Kitchen will be open so there will be a crowd. There are showers about but we should be able to get the game on.

Any questions please let me know.
