A terrific performance from the 5's didn't get the deserved victory on Saturday with Walton finding 6 wides in the last 2 overs to creep to a draw.
Losing the toss (as ever) Weybridge were asked to bat on the always unpredictable Coronation Rec. Unusually, we made a steady start before Bellwood chipped to mid on for 11. Thomas Entract however was well set and anchored the innings, facing 129 balls and falling on 96 agonisingly short of his maiden century on the last ball. With good contributions from Matt Goldsmith 18 and Jack Dunlop 16 our 163 looked very defendable.
Walton began slowly, Mark Stephenson removing opener Wheeler and their senior bats struggled with Josh Barbers accuracy, Josh bowling 2 maidens in a 5 over spell. Jack Dunlop took the key man and Saurabh took 2 to leave them 123-5. Economy was the key, Adam Crossland tying them down and Alistair Barber taking 3 wickets in what he claims was his first Cricket match. With Walton only scoring at 3 an over the game looked over but Cricket does strange things and somehow Walton scored 27 from the last 3 overs, their umpires calling 7 wides in that period to make extras their top scorer and tie the game. Walton called a grand total of 36 wides against us in contrast to the 7 we awarded. It's one way to play.
Credit to Thomas Entract for batting the entire 40 over innings and then keeping for the next 40. Surrey Warriors, Normandy and Croydon Lions all won again, Lions are now top and are our next league game on 9th August. We have plans for a friendly fixture next week.
